On Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the beach and the Waterfront Hilton Pavilion, beach and surfing activities celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Junior Guards and include youths, baseball, and surfing personalities.
On Saturday, January 19, 2013, Rex and Jennifer Hudler’s Team Up For Down Syndrome and The Friends of the Huntington Beach City Junior Lifeguards are hosting the second annual Surf’s Up For Down Syndrome. This exclusive event will be taking place at the Waterfront Hilton and on the sand in Huntington Beach and will draw hundreds of local businesses, community leaders and fans together in support of education and services for children who have special needs and to support Junior Lifeguard programs and scholarships.
This event will begin with morning beach and surfing activities involving youths with Down syndrome who will interact with surfing and baseball personalities and legends, and be assisted by Junior Lifeguards. Surfing personalities who will participate include four-time world champion Lisa Andersen, local pro Danny Nichols, champion Jericho Poppler, and local hero David Nuuhiwa. Many Angels Baseball greats, current and past, will also be in attendance, including Jered Weaver, Mark Trumbo, Hank Conger, Mark Langston and Eddie Guardado.
Down syndrome advocates will be treated to a ride in classic Woodie cars and delivered “red carpet style” to the Pavilion at the Waterfront Hilton, where the festivities will continue in the evening. The event includes a cocktail hour with positive music vibes from Caliconscious, followed by the island-inspired sounds of a ukulele ensemble and a delicious dinner. The silent and live auction feature surfing and baseball memorabilia, as well as one-of-a kind beach, sport, and entertainment experiences. Celebrity contributors include Angels players Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, and surf filmmaker Timmy Turner. The evening will be co-emceed by Rex “Wonder Dog” Hudler, former Angels Baseball player and current Fox Baseball analyst, and Peter “PT” Townend, the first World Professional Surfing champion. Live surf music featuring the iconic Chantays will complete the evening. Valet parking is complimentary and resort attire is suggested.
